Detailed Solution

William Bentick was the first governor-general of India. He was a peace, disciplined, and economic man who was active in England's reform movement. He declared that English should be the official language of India. He abolished provincial courts of appeal and circuit set-up.
Along with Raja Ram Mohan Roy, he abolished Sati pratha, child marriages, and child infanticide, as well as took strong measures to suppress the Thugee, which was prevalent at the time.
