Detailed Solution

The first Governor-General of India was Lord William Bentinck.
He significantly improved the country and abolished many evil practices like Sati and female infanticide. Sati was a practice in which a woman had to give up her life when her husband died. Bentinck signed the Bengal Sati Regulation on December 4, 1829, outlawing the practice of sati in all areas under British rule. The legislation referred to sati practice as abhorrent to human nature's sensibilities. The Bengal Sati Regulation, also known as Regulation XVII, rendered the practice of Sati unlawful in all areas of India and punishable by law.
