The first Indian Governor General of free India was C. Raja Gopalachari. He was an Indian statesman, writer, lawyer, independent activist, veteran nationalist, and leader of salt satyagraha in the south. Gopalachari was popularly known as Rajaji and served as a member of the Interim Government of 1946. He also founded the Swatantra Party and was one of the first recipients of India’s highest civilian award, the Bharat Ratna.
