The first Indian astronaut to reach space was Rakesh Sharma as a part of the Soyuz T-11 mission by the Soviet Union in 1984. He was one of the three astronauts carried to space by the Russian aircraft. Sharma and his Russian companions spent about eight days observing the Earth and researching various aspects. Rakesh Sharma concentrated on observing India from space, which he described as more beautiful than the rest of the world.
