The first king of the Delhi Sultanate was Qutb-ud-din Aibak, who ruled from 1206 to 1210 CE.

Early Delhi Rulers

Before the Delhi Sultanate, Delhi was ruled by Hindu kings like the Tomaras and Chauhans. The famous last Hindu ruler of Delhi was Prithviraj Chauhan, who lost to Muhammad Ghori in the Second Battle of Tarain in 1192. After Ghori’s death, Qutb-ud-din Aibak, his trusted slave and general, took power in Delhi.

Qutb-ud-din Aibak as the First King

He declared himself the Sultan of Delhi in 1206.
He started the Mamluk (Slave) Dynasty, the first dynasty of the Delhi Sultanate.
Though his reign was short (only 4 years), he is remembered as the founder of Delhi’s Muslim rule.

Achievements

He started the construction of Qutub Minar.
He built mosques like Quwwat-ul-Islam.
Expanded territories in North India.
Earned the title “Lakh Baksh” for his generosity.

Death and Succession

Aibak died in 1210 while playing polo. His son-in-law, Iltutmish, became Sultan and strengthened the Delhi Sultanate further.
