Swami Dayanand Saraswati founded the Arya Samaj. He was opposed to man-made rules such as women being unable to read the Vedas and others. He was also a major religious and social reformer of the nineteenth century. He was a sanyasi from a young age. By the second half of the nineteenth century, the pro-widow remarriage movement had spread to other parts of the country. At around the same time, young intellectuals and reformers in Bombay vowed to work for the same cause. Swami Dayanand Saraswati, the founder of the reform organisation Arya Samaj in the north, also supported widow remarriage.
