Robespierre was the head of the public safety committee.
The Committee of Public Safety controlled the new National Convention. Robespierre eventually gained control of the Committee and rose to the position of a dictator during the so-called Reign of Terror. Robespierre aimed to purge France of all Revolutionary foes and defend the "virtue" of the country. An estimated 16,000 individuals were executed by guillotine between September 1793 and July 1794. Along with moderates, several radicals were put to death. Most of the French Revolution's leaders had either died or left the country. The Committee of Public Safety and the National Convention became more hostile to Robespierre. Robespierre's declaration that he was the founder of a new religion devoted to the Supreme Being and the death of much-liked Committee member George-Jacques Danton incited great hostility. In the end, Robespierre was arrested and guillotined.
