Lord Mountbatten was the last Viceroy of India. The position of Viceroy was established by the Government of India Act of 1858. The East India Company rule was abolished, and this Act established the Crown rule. Therefore, the  Governor-General of India became the Viceroy of India. The last Viceroy of India was Lord Mountbatten. He was appointed in 1947. He was the person who presented the Mountbatten plan, which presented the plan for the independence of India. It proposed the partition of India. Lord Mountbatten remained the Viceroy of India till 1948 and presided over the partition plans. He was succeeded by  Rajagopalachari, who became the first Governor-General of independent India.
