The leader of rebel foresters in Andhra Pradesh was Alluri Sita Ram. Folk songs and tales continue to honour the Andhra Pradesh tribal leader Alluri Sitarama Raju, who launched a rebellion against the British. In 1879, he organised and led the Rampa Rebellion, a tribal rebellion in Vishakhapatnam's hills against a Zamindar's persecution. The draconian Madras Forest Act of 1882 was the major target of its protest. The British had occasionally violated the indigenous people's rights with their forest regulations, forcing them to handle their complaints on their own with little to no outside assistance. To win over the public, Alluri borrowed strategies from the Non-Cooperation movement, such as promoting temperance and the rejection of colonial courts in favour of panchayat courts, which administer local justice.
