Otto von Bismarck was the main architect of nation-building in Germany. He was a conservative German statesman who had mastered Germany's coalition in 1871. Nationalist sentiments were widespread among middle-class Germans. They attempted to unite the various regions of the German confederation into a nation-state governed by an elected parliament in 1848. Prussia led the movement for national unification. Three wars with Austria, Denmark, and France lasted seven years and resulted in a Prussian victory, completing the unification process. Bismarck was instrumental in establishing the new German empire led by William Kaiser I of Prussia.
