Detailed Solution

The main person behind the passing of the Widow Remarriage Act of 1856 was Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar.
Through his publications, Rammohun Roy aimed to demonstrate that ancient literature did not support the practice of burning widows. He used an approach that was later employed by reformers. Thus, Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar, one of the most well-known reformers, suggested that widows could remarry based on ancient literature. The British officials followed his recommendation, passing a statute allowing widow remarriage in 1856. However, those who opposed widow remarriage protested Vidyasagar and engaged in a boycott.
