Balaji Vishwanath was chosen by Maratha Emperor Shahu Maharaj to serve as the Peshwa, or Prime Minister, of the Maratha Empire, on November 16, 1713.
Balaji was born on January 1st, 1662 in Shrivardhan, now a part of Maharashtra's Raigad district.
The first of several hereditary Peshwas and the sixth Peshwa of the Maratha Empire was Balaji Vishwanath.
Due to his outstanding service to Chhatrapati Shahu, he is referred to as the "Second creator of the Maratha State." Emperor Shahu was able to unite the Maratha Empire and subjugate numerous rival factions with the aid of Balaji. Balaji was able to win over the Marathas and aimed to create a powerful, cohesive entity.
