  • William Adam traveled to India in 1818 and stayed for almost 27 years.
  • Adam was chosen by Lord William Bentinck, the governor-general of India, in 1835 to assess the quality of education in Bengal and Bihar and recommend changes.
  • The business had asked him to provide a report on the state of education in regional (local) schools.
  • In Bengal and Bihar, Adam discovered that there were about 1 lakh pathshalas.
  • Adam turned in three reports (1835-1838).
