Detailed Solution

Lord Irwin was the Viceroy with whom Gandhiji tried to take up the salt tax reforms. In a powerful letter dated 31st January 1930, Gandhiji wrote to the then Viceroy Lord Irwin, detailing 11 demands. One of those demands was the abolition of the salt taxes. Salt was a symbol of the masses. It was a cheap commodity which everyone in the country used, irrespective of religion, caste, place of residence, background, or economic status. By imposing taxes, the British government made this essential commodity challenging to obtain for all Indians. Gandhiji believed that a campaign fighting against this unfair measure was a cause everyone in the country could get behind.
