Detailed Solution

John Carlos and Tommie Smith were found guilty of violating the Olympic spirit by making a political statement. In the Olympics held in Mexico City in 1968, Tommie Smith and John Carlos won the gold and bronze medal in the 200 metres race. The two men belonged to the African-American community. While the US national anthem played, they stood wearing black gloves with their clenched fists upraised and bowed. The gesture symbolised Black Power. Furthermore, they received their medals wearing black socks and no shoes representing the Black people in the US who faced poverty. They made gestures to draw international attention to the discrimination Blacks faced in the US. However, they were both held guilty of making a political statement while violating the Olympic spirit.
