The Nayanars and Alvars were sharply critical of the Buddhists and Jainas. The Nayanars were believers of Shiva, whereas the Alvars were Vishnu devotees. They launched a protest campaign against the caste system and Brahmana supremacy in an effort to change it. They advocated fervent adoration of Shiva or Vishnu as the road to salvation and were harsh critics of the Buddhists and Jainas. They combined the principles of Bhakti with the concepts of love and bravery found in Sangam literature, the earliest work of Tamil literature that was written in the first years of the Common Era.
