Detailed Solution

On the island of Java, the Kalangs were a group of skilful forest cutters and shifting farmers. They were significant for harvesting teak and building palaces. They were so valuable on the island of Indonesia that when the Mataram kingdom of Java split, the 6,000 Kalang families were equally divided between the two kingdoms. When the Dutch began to gain control over the forests, they tried to force the Kalangs to work under them. The Kalangs revolted in 1770 by attacking a Dutch fort at Joana.
