Detailed Solution

Samanthas were the big landlords who were King's subordinates. Samantas were large landowners or warrior chiefs in various subcontinental regions. Existing monarchs viewed them as subordinates.
The Samantas presented their rulers or overlords with presents. They continued to attend their courts and events hosted by them. They gave military support to the kings. When the Samantas attained power and wealth, they proclaimed themselves maka-samanta, maha-mandaleshvara (the great lord of a 'circle' or region). They occasionally asserted their independence from their masters.
