Santhals and Oraons were the followers of Birsa Munda.
One of the prominent leaders of the Munda family was Birsa Munda. He was born in the Munda tribal group of Chota Nagpur in Jharkhand. He was said to have had miraculous and magical powers. It was said that he could cure all diseases. Birsa Munda declared himself a person appointed by God to protect his people from trouble and free their slavery to dikus, meaning outsiders. Members of the tribes of the Santhals and Oraons also followed him. The main reason why these people followed him was that they were unhappy with British rule.
