Kulaks were well-to-do peasants. In Russian and Soviet history, a kulak was a wealthy or prosperous peasant who typically possessed a sizable farm, several cattle and horses, and the financial wherewithal to hire labour and lease property. The kulaks held a significant position in the peasant communities before the Russian Revolution of 1917. To "eradicate kulaks, remove land from peasants, and build substantial state-controlled farms, it was necessary to develop modern farms and run them following industrial lines using machinery.
