Muhammad Ali and Shaukat Ali were the leaders of the Khilafat Movement. The Khilafat Movement emerged with the defeat of Ottoman Turkey in the First World War. The Ottoman Emperor was the spiritual head of the Islamic world, also known as the Khalifa, until the event of the defeat of the Central Powers in the First World War. Khilafat Movement was established to defend Khalifa’s temporal powers. Muhammad Ali and Shaukat Ali belonged to the young generation of Muslim leaders who represented the Khilafat Movement and were involved in discussing with Mahatma Gandhi the possibility of united mass action.
