The Mongols were the most well-known pastoral and hunter-gatherer group in history. They inhabited the northern woodlands and steppes of Central Asia. By 1206, Genghis Khan had united the Turkish and Mongol tribes into a formidable army. The Mongol Empire was founded by Genghis Khan (r. 1206–1227), the first Great Khan, or "universal ruler" of the Mongol peoples (1206–1368).
