Detailed Solution

Sanatanis were upper-class Hindus who controlled Congress. They established upper-class hegemony while ignoring the rights of the lower classes, particularly Dalits. According to Hinduism, they believed in the superiority of the higher classes and the subjection of the lower classes. Furthermore, Congress overlooked Dalit rights for a long period because of fear of sanatanis. However, Gandhiji later called for the abolition of untouchability. Gandhi referred to "untouchables" as "Harijans," or God's offspring. He believed that removing untouchability would delay the arrival of Swaraj by a hundred years.
