John Reed wrote about the hardships of war in his piece "Whose War?" from April 1917. He discussed how people romanticise war to the point where they fail to recognise the truth that people will die, their sons won't return home, and they won't return to the same person they left. Reed and Bryant defended the Bolsheviks back home in the United States and opposed the American invasion. However, the populace largely rejected Reed because they were upset over Russia's decision to end its involvement in the conflict with Germany. Reed died of typhus while weak after his time in prison, and Bryant was by his side as he passed away on October 17, 1920, in a Moscow hospital.
