Sardinia Piedmont forged France an alliance to defeat the Austrian forces in 1859. He founded secret societies, notably Young Italy. However, neither the 1831 nor the 1848 revolutionary revolutions succeeded in their goals. King Victor Emmanuel II, the monarch of Sardinia and Piedmont, was charged with uniting all of these Italian states. A united Italy was supported by the upper classes as well. He received assistance from Chief Minister Cavour, who worked to forge a diplomatic relationship with France. Sardinia Piedmont was able to overcome the Austrian army in 1859 thanks to the support of French forces.
