The Nayanars worshipped Shiva. Between the 7th and 9th centuries, new religious groups, led by Nayanars (saints devoted to Shiva) and Alvars (saints devoted to Vishnu), originated. They came from all castes, even those regarded as 'untouchables,' such as the Pulaiyar and the Panars. They preached that respecting Shiva and Vishnu was the path to salvation and hated Buddhists and Jains. They linked bhakti ideas with the characteristics of devotion and heroism in Sangam literature. At the same time, travelling and created original poetry and songs in homage to their gods, Nayanars and Alvars.
