Teacher's Day in India is celebrated on September 5th every year to honor the birthday of Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, a great teacher, philosopher, and former President of India.

About Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan

Dr. Radhakrishnan was not only a respected academician but also a philosopher and statesman who deeply valued education. He served as the President of India from 1962 to 1967 and was the Vice President of India from 1952 to 1962. Before his presidency, he was also India's ambassador to the Soviet Union between 1949 and 1952.

Why Is His Birthday Celebrated as Teacher's Day?

In the year 1947, some of the students and friends of Dr. Radhakrishnan asked to celebrate his birth anniversary. He modestly proposed that he would not celebrate his birthday but it would be best to make his birthday Teacher’s Day in order to celebrate teachers around the nation. Ever since, the 5th of September has been set aside to appreciate the role of teachers in molding the society.
