Why are mitochondria known as the powerhouse of the cell?

Mitochondria are called the powerhouse of the cell because they generate most of the cell’s energy in the form of ATP. Every living cell needs energy for activities like growth, repair, movement, and communication. 

This energy is not used directly from food. Instead, food like glucose is broken down during cellular respiration inside mitochondria. Through biochemical reactions, mitochondria release energy and store it in ATP molecules. ATP can then be transported throughout the cell to power different processes.

How mitochondria produce energy

• Glycolysis: Glucose is broken into pyruvate in the cytoplasm.
• Krebs Cycle (in mitochondrial matrix): Pyruvate is broken down to release electrons and carbon dioxide.
• Electron Transport Chain (in inner membrane): Electrons move through proteins, creating a proton gradient.
• ATP Synthase: Uses the gradient to produce ATP from ADP and phosphate.

Why the title “powerhouse” fits

• Mitochondria produce about 90% of the ATP in a cell.
• They provide energy for muscle contraction, nerve impulse transmission, and biosynthesis.
• Without mitochondria, cells would not have enough energy to survive.

This constant energy supply is why mitochondria are called the powerhouse of the cell. They are like tiny power stations inside every living cell.
