Why can't we taste food when we have a cold?

When we have a cold we find that we don't enjoy eating food; they taste so bland. The reason behind this is that two out of our five senses are interconnected, taste and smell. The smell of food plays a big role in having food; sometimes the smell makes us hungry or lures us to try a new food item.
