As the British economy collapsed after World War I, Manchester never recaptured its old position in the Indian market.
India was a significant cotton textile manufacturer. However, from the beginning of the nineteenth century, India's export of cotton began to drop. As England's cotton industries grew, the country's business people were concerned about the import of foreign cotton products.
British mills were busy with war goods to provide for the needs of the troops during the First World War. Due to the increased mill productivity during the war, the import of Manchester goods into India decreased.
Manchester could not deal with countries like the US, Germany, and Japan after the war. British cotton exports decreased due to the downfall of the British economy and the textile industry.
