Congress ignored the Dalits for a long time for the fear of offending the Sanatanis.
1)      For an extended period, Congress disregarded the Dalits for concern of upsetting the sanatanis, the traditional high-caste Hindus.
2)      The Varna system did not include the Dalit community since they were considered untouchable or downtrodden. In India, Dalits are now referred to as the Schedule caste.
3)      Mahatma Gandhi noticed that the Dalits were absent from every independence movement. He called them Harijans and included their cause in his Satyagraha movements.
4)      Moreover, Dalits were also organised by leaders like Dr Ambedkar. Thus the Dalits participated in this movement for the first time.
