English wool and silk producers resisted importing Indian textiles in the early eighteenth century because of the competition in the market.
In the 18th century, England's textile industry was barely getting started. English wool and silk producers discovered they couldn't keep up with Indian cloth. By restricting the entry of Indian textiles, they hoped to secure the market. They started to protest against the importation of Indian cotton textiles because they were alarmed by the popularity of Indian textiles. The usage of printed cotton textiles, such as chintz, was outlawed in England by a law passed by the British government in 1720.
Interestingly, this Act was called the Calico Act. England's textile industries were only now starting to take off at this point. English textile manufacturers sought to secure their market by blocking the arrival of Indian textiles since they could not compete with those products on the international market.
