Gandhiji began fast unto death when Dr B. R. Ambedkar demanded a separate electorate for Dalits. Separate electorates would slow down the process of integration of Dalits into society. Gandhi Ji has fasted against the ambition of BR Ambedkar to win the votes of various Dalit voters, as he believes this will only deepen the divisions that destroy the Hindu community. The British announced various voters for the Dalits to appease the lower classes in Indian society. They had already done this with Christians and Muslims. Although the two were separate religions with different values and cultures, Gandhiji viewed the British move as an attempt to divide the Hindu community into two separate sects, weakening their opposition to British rule. In Gandhi's view, the classification system was not inherently evil. Still, those who discriminated against them and misbehaved were wrong, while in Ambedkar's view, the whole racist system was naturally racist. The destruction of this system would provide an opportunity for promotion for the lowly.
