Detailed Solution

Mahatma Gandhi visited Champaran (a Bihar district) to see the indigo planters' plight.
Indigo production in Bengal ended just after the peasant revolt. However, the planters then moved their operations to Bihar. Their business was severely impacted by the discovery of synthetic dyes in the late nineteenth century. However, they somehow managed to expand production. When Mahatma Gandhi returned from South Africa, a Bihar peasant convinced him to go to Champaran to see the plight of the indigo cultivators. Thus, the visit of Mahatma Gandhi in 1917 marked the beginning of the Champaran movement against indigo planters.
