Detailed Solution

General Dyer opened fire on the crowd in Jallianwala Bagh because his objective was to produce a moral effect that can create fear in the minds of the Satyagrahis.
General Dyer also intended to send the message that there would be no resistance to British colonial power in India. Moreover, he wanted to execute martial law in Amritsar firmly. This catastrophe, known as the Jallianwala Bagh Massacre, killed over a thousand people. The Jallianwala Bagh Massacre occurred when British forces opened fire on a massive gathering of unarmed Indians in Amritsar, killing hundreds and injuring hundreds more. It took place in 1919, on 13th April.
