Detailed Solution

An assembly of the Estates General was called by Louis XVI to impose new taxes.
King Louis XVI of France had to increase taxes due to the funding of American independence against the British, wars in Europe and the extravagant style of living in Paris that had led to the draining of the treasury in France. Therefore, more taxes had to be levied to increase the revenue present with the State. Thus, on May 5, 1789, Louis XVI convened the Estates General assembly to consider new tax ideas. The three estates of the society sent their representatives to make their demands heard.
