Detailed Solution

Sri Lankan Tamils launched parties and struggled in Sri Lanka in the 1980s to declare Tamil as the national language. In 1956, a law establishing Sinhala as the official language was passed, and the majoritarian Sinhalese government established policies favouring Sinhala job applicants. Due to their isolation, the minority Sri Lankan Tamils formed political organisations and began campaigns to gain Tamil official language status and equal opportunities in education and employment. The 1980s had formed many political groups to support the creation of an independent Tamil Eelam (state) in northern and eastern Sri Lanka. However, the Sinhalese government generally turned down their requests for further autonomy for regions with a large Tamil population.
