The succession of a new monarch often saw a conflict between the old and the new nobility because enslaved people were loyal to their masters and not to heirs and new sultans had servants. The Khaljis and Tughlaqs promoted persons from modest backgrounds—often their clients—to top government positions in addition to continuing to employ bandages. They were selected to be generals and governors. But political instability was also a new element that was added. Enslaved people and customers were devoted to their enslavers and clients but not to their heirs. As a result, conflicts between the old and new nobles were frequent after a new monarch came to power. The Delhi sultans' promotion of these commoners startled many elites, and the Persian tawarikh authors attacked the Delhi sultans for appointing the "poor and base-born" to important positions.
