Detailed Solution

The business classes in India participated in the Civil Disobedience Movement because they needed protection from foreign goods imports, Rupee sterling foreign exchange ratio, and to organise economic interests.
Indian industrialists and merchants generated enormous profits and grew during the First World War. Hence, they reacted to colonial regulations that limited economic activity since they were eager to grow their business. Moreover, they desired protection from foreign goods imports and a rupee-to-sterling exchange rate that would discourage imports. To organise economic interests, they founded the Federation of the Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industries (FICCI) in 1927 and the Indian Industrial and Commercial Congress in 1920. The industrialists, led by well-known businessmen like Purshottamdas Thakurdas and G. D. Birla, fought against colonial control of the Indian economy and initially supported the Civil Disobedience Movement.
