Detailed Solution

The Civil War in Russia occurred because the Bolsheviks were opposed to private property, and the soldiers wished to go home for the redistribution of land.
The Bolsheviks' decree to redistribute land caused the Russian army to disintegrate. For the redistribution, the soldiers—most of whom were peasants—wanted to return home and left. Socialists, liberals, and pro-autocracy activists who were not Bolsheviks denounced the insurrection. Their leaders relocated to southern Russia and assembled a force to combat the Bolsheviks (also known as the "reds"). The majority of the Russian empire was governed by "greens" (Socialist Revolutionaries) and "whites" (pro-Tsarists) in 1918 and 1919. They had the support of troops from France, America, Great Britain, and Japan, all of which were concerned about the spread of socialism in Russia. Looting, banditry, and starvation increased as these forces and the Bolsheviks engaged in a civil war.
