The Indian indigo cultivators rebelled because they were forced to cultivate indigo. At the beginning of the 19th century, the British promoted the cultivation of indigo and made peasants sign contracts agreeing to cultivate indigo on at least 25% of their land. They were paid less and usually at uneconomical prices. The cultivation had to be on fertile land. The farmers who wanted to cultivate rice in the fertile land had no option. The indigo exhausted the land, making it unable to cultivate rice. Later, with the arrival of woad dye, Indian indigo imports were banned in the European market, causing a loss. Then, because farmers were not freed from the oppressive cultivation system, it became a never-ending cycle. It agitated the farmers, as they were the ones who were suffering the most and started to protest.
