Detailed Solution

The members of the Third Estate walked out of the Estates General because the proposal of one man, one vote was rejected. The Estates General was summoned by the monarch Louis XVI to Versailles to pass his proposals for new taxes on 5 May 1789. Three hundred members from the first two estates each and 600 members from the Third Estate assembled. The educated and the wealthier sections of the Third Estate were represented in the Estates General. The reason the Third Estate representatives walked out of the assembly was that the monarch refused to agree to their demand of one man, one vote, instead of each estate one vote. They thought their demand was justified because they constituted about 90% of the population but were always outvoted by the first two estates, which were a minority.
