The rulers in Bengal commissioned the construction of temples to display their power and devotion.
Temples and other religious buildings were frequently constructed by powerful individuals or groups to announce their piety and show off their might. Several "low" socioeconomic groups, such as the Kolu (oil pressers) and the Kansari, helped build many of Bengal's humble brick and terracotta temples (bell metal workers). With the arrival of European trading firms, new economic opportunities were brought about, and many families belonging to various social categories took advantage of them. As their social and economic standing increased, they built temples to demonstrate their status. When the Brahmanas came to recognise the local deities that had previously been worshiped in thatched huts in the villages, their statues started to be kept in temples.
