In 1857, the sepoys rejected the new Enfield rifle or cartridges because they believed that they were greased with the fats of pigs and cows. The introduction of these cartridges upset both Hindus and Muslim soldiers. They declined to use the cartridges since doing so would have hurt their religious feelings. One of the reasons for the sepoy rebellion of 1857 was the fact that it had offended the religious sensitivities of both Muslims and Hindus. As no Hindu would eat beef and no Muslim would eat pork, the soldiers believed that the British were trying to downgrade their religion.
