Detailed Solution

The Sri Lankan Tamils launch parties and struggle in Sri Lanka to recognise Tamil as a national language.
The Tamils of Sri Lanka started political parties and campaigns for the recognition of Tamil as an official language, for regional autonomy, and equitable access to education and employment. The Sri Lankan Tamils made up just 13 per cent of the country's population. A statute was passed in 1956 designating Sinhala as the only official language, and the government put out measures favouring Sinhala applicants for government jobs. Tamils in Sri Lanka believed that their interests were overlooked by the constitution and government policies, which denied them equal political rights and discriminated against them in employment and other possibilities. As a result, the Sri Lankan Tamils established political organisations and waged campaigns.
