The Sri Lankan Tamils initiated a protest demanding the recognition of the Tamil language as an official language of Sri Lanka. They also made other demands, such as regional autonomy and equality of opportunity in securing jobs and education. However, these demands were usually turned down by the government. Due to the inaction, the need for an independent Tamil state arose from many political organizations in the 1980s. This political war between the communities soon turned into a massive conflict. This widespread conflict turned into a Civil War. Thus, it all emanated from the refusal to share power with the Tamil minority in the country, which caused a feeling of alienation among the Tamils.
