The African National Congress (ANC) led the movements. They are also associated with communist elements. Several countries across the world recognized apartheid as unjust and racist. The whites soon realized the popular struggle and believed they couldn't keep blacks under their control. So they decided to change the policies. They banned the political parties, repealed discriminatory laws, and removed restrictions on the media. The political prisoners were set free.
