Tommie Smith wear black socks and no shoes to represent the poverty blacks faced.
During the 200-metre race medal ceremony at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics. The two men standing during the playing of the American anthem with their heads lowered and fists raised are US athletes Tommie Smith and John Carlos. They identify as black Americans.
