Why do mammals' skins lack mucus glands?

The mucus-secreting glands really aren't visible on the skin, but they can be found throughout the body, including the windpipe, nasal chambers, and alimentary canal. Mucous glands in these areas are responsible for secreting mucus and keeping the area moist. Because mammals do not breathe through their skin, they do not have mucus glands.
