Why do stars directly above you twinkle more than the stars on the horizon?

Stars at the horizon appear to twinkle more than the stars above you. When light from a star near the horizon travels towards an observer on the Earth's surface, it has to pass through more of the Earth's atmosphere than light from a star higher in the sky. This is because the atmosphere near the horizon is thicker and denser than the atmosphere higher up.
